Canadian pop artist Shawn Mendes is unrecognised in the UK, however with having held the top spot in the official charts for almost 2 weeks, his fan base is substantially growing. Some may argue one of his biggest achievements is replacing Justin Bieber at number one in the official charts. Mendes’ most recent album has gained over 2 million downloads.
So how did he become of this success?
Mendes most recently supported country and pop sensation Taylor Swift on her 1989 world tour. Some may remember his debut single Life of the party that was released in 2014 and reached number 5 in Canada. In the UK, however, it only made it to 99 of the top 100.
Originally, his manager on the music app Vine scouted Shawn Mendes, where he had a significant amount of followers. He used the app to perform covers, which sparked major interest.
At the current young age of 17, he has achieved many awards such as Teen Choice Award for ‘Choice Best Web Star’ and MTV Europe Music Awards for ‘Best New Artist’ and ‘Best Push Artist’. Most recently, Mendes won ‘Best Breakthrough Artist’ on Peoples Choice Awards.
He has featured in The Vamps single Oh Cecilia and has done a recent collaboration with Camila Cabello (Fifth Harmony singer), track called I know what you did last summer.
Shawn Mendes has also performed with the likes of Demi Lovato and Elton John adding to his popularity.
Oh, and he is also best friends with the one and only Ed Sheeran.
Shawn Mendes has just released dates and tickets to his upcoming world tour, and it seemed to be so popular the servers crashed!
The world is Shawn Mendes’ oyster, as far as he’s concerned. He has a growing fan base, largely down to his active role with Snapchat, Twitter and Instagram. It seems the fans love him even more knowing they literally can see his every more, making him furthermore entertaining.
Shawn has also featured in CW’s The 100 as a character in season 3, acting is a potential pathway for Mendes too.
