Music legend David Bowie passed away at the age of 69 after an 18-month battle from cancer. The news of his death was publicised over social media within minutes of fans showing their distress that a talented musician such as Bowie lost his life too soon. This article will take a look at his life and works as a truly celebrated musician and actor.

Bowie is mainly known for his appearance in the film Labyrinth which made an appearance in 1986 as a British-American musical fantasy. Most of the characters in this film are puppets excluding Bowie (the goblin King), Jennifer Connelly (Sarah) and Toby Froud (Toby). The film consists of songs performed by Bowie himself that was loved by nations. When Bowie passed away, Facebook was filled with quotes from the Labyrinth such as ‘you remind me of the babe’ and ‘dance magic dance’ which are taken from Bowie’s single Magic Dance.

Although Bowie’s appearance in this film was what made many adults think of their childhood, he released over 25 albums. The most famous of his songs released included Life on mars, Ashes to ashes and Changes. He was particularly praised for his experiments among different musical genres. The last album that was released by Bowie was for a tribute for his 69th birthday called Blackstar. It has been suggested that this album was released as a way for Bowie to say goodbye. It has received much critical acclaim and has been noticed that this last album is the only one to not show a picture of Bowie himself on the front cover.

After Bowie’s death a heartbreaking message was posted on Facebook by Tony Visconti stating ‘He always did what he wanted to do. And he wanted to do it his way and he wanted to do it the best way. His death was no different from his life—a work of art He made Blackstar for us, his parting gift. I knew for a year this was the way it would be. I wasn’t, however, prepared for it. He was an extraordinary man, full of love and life. He will always be with us. For now, it is appropriate to cry’. Visconti produced many of David Bowie’s albums including Low, Heroes and Young Americans. It was evident that he has built a strong relationship with Bowie and like many of his fans was devastated when the news broke that he had died.

It is known that David Bowie has not appeared in front on the public for almost a decade after he has suffered a heart attack whilst touring in 2004 he only really made a few small performances. One of these was where he performed with Alicia Keys for a charity event and as a role in the film the prestige in 2006.

In order to celebrate all of Bowie’s achievements and the ways he has touched many hearts would take a whole novel. Therefore, I suggest you turn up your radio and listen to every Bowie song you can give your hand on and let that magic dance take you away. Sadly, for Bowie’s fans and family, there was no magic spell to use to prevent us from losing a truly inspirational and talented man. David Bowie, you will indeed be missed. You remind me of the babe.
