Instagram was launched in 2010 by Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger and rose to popularity pretty quick. By 2012 it had a user base of 100 million, over 300 million in 2014 and now has reached 500 million active users. Comparatively Twitter Inc. has stalled at just above 300 million and Facebook has about 1.6 billion users. Instagram was acquired by Facebook in 2012 for one billion U.S. dollars in cash and stocks. Instagram is now one of the most popular social media platforms worldwide and contributes significantly to Facebook’s revenue.

Instagram said on average more than 95 million photos and videos are being shared every day, with posts getting 4.2 billion “likes” each day.

Instagram is a social media platform that allows users to share their images and videos publicly or only to their friends if they choose to keep their account private. If the users have connected their other social media accounts such as Facebook, Flickr, Tumblr and Twitter to Instagram they can simultaneously share the images on those accounts while posting them on Instagram. Users can also edit their images by changing the brightness, contrast, saturation and by adding fade, vignette and many more adjustments. Instagram offers a number of filters that users can apply to their image. Instagram also allows users to send direct or group messages. Profiles and images on Instagram can be sent by users to their followers as messages. The app has its presence on iOS as well as Android and Windows Mobile and is available for free.
