Marking the occasion of International Women’s Day on March 8, a statue titled ‘Fearless girl’ was installed right opposite to the famous Walls Street Bull. The statue was tactfully installed in such a way that it appears that the little girl is confronting the Bull, sending a powerful pro-feminism message.
The State Street Global Advisors designed the bronze piece, calling on companies to “take concrete steps to increase gender diversity on their boards and have issued clear guidance to help them begin to take action,” said Ron O’Hanley, CEO of SSGA.
International Women’s Day saw women around the globe bring up gender issues that are prevalent even today. Some of these issues include equal pay for equal work and secure expansion of worker protections, including a living wage, fair schedules and paid family leave.
The statue of the ‘Fearless girl’ will remain in its place for at least a week.
On the occasion of International Women’s Day, the hashtag #InternationalWomensDay began to trend on Twitter, as did #ADayWithoutWomen. #ADayWithoutWomen attracted a fair share of negative attention as it asks women to stay home and take the day off, an action that some have accused of being elitist as not all women have the privilege of taking such a decision. Also trending was the hashtag #SheInspiresMe, where people tweeted about important female figures like Emma Watson, Michelle Obama, Jessica Chastain and Lady Gaga as well as their own mother, female relatives and friends.
