CAPE VERDE—Cape Verde has secured a place into the Africa Cup of Nations quarterfinals. The fact that the island was able to go on to the quarterfinals came as a surprise to its coach Lucio Antunes.

Cape Verde soared into the quarterfinals after defeating Angola in Port Elizabeth, South Africa 2-1.

The Cape Verde ‘Blue Sharks’ surprised the world and other teams with its dramatic win in the last 9 minutes of the game against after trailing 1-0 behind Angola due to an own-goal. During the 33rd minute of the match, Blue Sharks player Neves scored an own goal for Angola. Luckily, Gege was able to equalize the goal during the 81st minute and Heldon later scored the winning goal.

Before its match against Angola, in the previous two games with South Africa and Morroco the Blue Sharks drew but managed to defeat the Cameroonian team in the qualifying play off. Coach Antunes told reporters that the victory of his team can be dedicated “to the wonderful people of the Cape Verde Islands.” He went on to state that the “objective at this tournament has been achieved. We wanted to reach the quarterfinals.” Additionally Antunes revealed before the Africa Cup of Nations tournament hosted by South Africa that Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho had given him key advice.
