The biology of dreaming and dream research must be some of the most beautifully worded notions in science. Brought about by years of exploration and inquiry, the many theories on nightmares seek to define their what and why. Could they be the hazardous brain stimulation modern biologists say they are, or maybe it’d be more appropriate to see them as visual metaphors of human emotions-  it was good enough for Hartmann, and he was a psychoanalyst. Not to worry though. For if there is clear right and wrong in science, art prides itself in a gracious and most liberating policy of inclusion.  The artist and the art choose their own path. Nydia Lilian certainly did, with her wonderful series of gifs ‘Bad dreams’.

Lilian is a young photographer and graphic designer, born in 1985, in Monterrey, Mexico. Having photography as both a profession and an escape, she says ‘a lot of my work is a reflection of those new worlds and dimensions I imagined in my head’. Her love of geometry and form is combined with a sheer passion for altering photographs. It’s mainly by way of technology that she extracts the idea from her mind, and makes it travel safely all the way to the lens. ‘We ought to take advantage of technology in any way we can’, Lilian says.

In ‘Bad dreams’, the gifs are composed from photographs flashing amid their initial colour and its corresponding negative, while giving the illusion of an ongoing psychedelic zoom. The series is in black and white, like the overwhelming majority of her wonderfully mysterious work, as Lilian makes use of how ‘it charms the viewers and makes them wonder’. Black and white is also used for its value of neutrality, which allows the composition of the photograph to be the factor that dominates the viewing process. It’s an art of highlights, the photographer bringing to the front those details that are closest to her private vision of bad dreams and creating an art that is both delightful and fearsome.
