Apple recently announced their latest update for their iPod, iPhone and iPad, with fairly big changes to both the interface and the mechanics of the device in an attempt to make the whole system “the world’s most advanced mobile OS”.
With the drama surrounding iOS 6 and its less than useful Apple Maps system (that forcefully replaced the technically sound Google Maps), iOS 7 will surely attempt to do everything in its power to keep Apple users content. Apple has noted that they will intend to improve their maps system but alongside that, more prominent changes begin with what you can see – the massive interface overhaul.
They’ve gone for a far cleaner look instead of the fairly ‘chunky’, dark looking interface of systems; it now has an interface that feels a lot fresher. It’s not much, but it will no doubt make a difference to users, for better or worse. One has to wonder whether changing icons will just lead to irritation when users can’t find settings because it looks so different.
‘Control Centre’ replicates a system already present in many smartphones, but it is a neat touch nonetheless. By simply swiping the screen up you can change a variety of features, from the brightness to airplane mode or even the new flashlight. Again it isn’t much, but it follows the whole aesthetic of the operating system, which is about streamlining an already smooth system. There is also a ‘notification system’ that puts all of your notifications, whether it is texts, apps or anything else, into one handy location. All of these systems follow the same new translucent design used across all elements of the iPod, iPhone and iPad.
Other changes include a more dynamic safari browser, a more simplistic layout on the camera (now with the option of panoramic shots, among other things) and a photo gallery that automatically arranges pictures into groups based on their location. Siri is also (slowly) being changed to acknowledge languages and accents that aren’t just standard American found in the original system.
Whether this more ‘streamlined’ approach will resonate well with Apple owners, is something we are going to have to wait until its launch in autumn.
