Greenland

NUUK –  A country whose name proclaims it to be a green land, yet there is almost no green colour. The Norse sagas tell a story of Erik the Red who was deported from Iceland due to murder and went to find land north-west. Grønland (Greeland) was the name given to the island – probably to appeal for more people to come to live there.

However, it seems that the name did not do its job. In the whole country there are approximately 56,000 people (16,000 in the capital Nuuk, what makes it one of the smallest capitals by population in the world). Greenland is an autonomous country within the Kingdom of Denmark, with many people speaking Danish, even though there is an official Greenlandic (Kalaallisut) language. Because of the harsh wintry weather conditions, remoteness from the rest of the world and difficulties of finding a job, quite a few Greenlander people choose to emigrate, mostly to Denmark.

One of the main industries in Greenland is fishing, and you definitely should try to catch something yourself; cod, rose fish or a Greenland shark, it is your personal choice! To make sure you will get the most of your fishing experience, there are some tourist offices which offer fishing tours where you are very likely to catch the greatest fish of your life.

Musk oxenRemember that Greenland belongs to the Arctic zone, and so all types of Arctic animals can be met, luckily, most of the time in uninhabited areas – musk oxen, polar bear, reindeer, to name but a few. You may even join a whale safari as there are about 20 different species in Greenland. The importance of animals is even shown on Greenland’s national arms, which portray a polar bear. It is the mightiest animal in Greenland, occupying lands mostly in the east and north, far away from people.

If you are eager for more wild nature, mountaineering is a great option. It may be a difficult decision to choose a place as there are tons of them but one of the most popular is Gunnbjørns Fjeld. No matter which mountain you choose, you will have a lot of fun. Although they are not too high, they are still very challenging and you should carefully plan beforehand your route and all the equipment which you may need. The good thing is that the area is vast so you will not have to queue for climbing. Moreover, drinking water is world class here and there are not any mosquitoes, snakes or other poisonous animals. Plus, it is even cheaper than mountaineering in Himalayas or other famous locations.

So much intensive action will make you hungry and the delicacies of Greenland are all great for providing you with energy. The first place on the table of Greenland cuisine goes to the meat. In old times, abundance of meat reassured the survival of the tribe, and it is still an important object of everyday conversations. It is of very high quality, fresh and cheap. The most popular types of meat include fish, lamb, seals, reindeer, whales and musk oxen. These and other products are all organic, and are far away from people in fields where no chemicals are used. Both flora and fauna preserves its natural flavour.
