Two members of the Russian punk rock band Pussy Riot have been released today under new Amnesty laws within the country.
Maria Alyokhina and Nadezhda Tolokonnikova were both arrested alongside Yekaterina Samutsevich in March of 2012 after they verballed attacked Vladimir Putin in a performance outside of Moscow’s Cathedral of Christ the Savior in February of the same year.
The decision to release the two has come about from new pressure within the country to improve human rights, but many, including Alyokhina, believe that this is just a PR stunt in order to quickly improve the countries image before the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi.
“I do not think it is a humanitarian act, I think it is a PR stunt,” said Alyokhina. ”My attitude to the president has not changed.”
“They just put on another show ahead of the Olympics… Such is their big desire to prevent all European countries from boycotting our Russian Olympics.”
More to come…
