Growing up, amongst many other things, means changing one’s fashion style. It is quiet obvious that as small kids, every one of us was dressed up by his/ her mother. It started with getting cute baby overalls and continued with all the clothes we had throughout puberty. When we look at the photos from this time, most of us are happy we can make our own decisions about clothing at this point. How is it possible then that people choose to dress themselves into the onesies?
Website funzee.co.uk describes onesie as an “infant one piece romper suit which is a combination of a top and trousers.” According to the same website, this piece of clothing started to be popular around 1950′s and was mainly used to “keep babies clean, dry and cosy.”
Undoubtedly, it is especially important to wear something warm during the cold months. And not only for the small children. However, while we were comfortable wearing two-piece pyjamas until recently, celebrities started to promote onesies, until now worn predominantly by toddlers.
Leigh Langston says that onesies entered the market around the end of 2012 when a group of three Norwegian friends decided to experiment with their clothes. Langston provides statistics, indicating that at the end of 2012 “onesie sales were up 600% and supermarket giant ASDA alone sold almost 900,000 pieces in the run up to the big day.” Despite that, wasn’t there a larger occurrence of selfies in onsies at the end of 2013?
Browsing through Instagram during Christmas break, one could find American celebrities such as Nina Dobrev or her friend Julianne Hough wearing onesies. I must have seriously missed the hype around this relatively new trend because even my friends seemed to be introduced to it, sharing their new Christmas presents on Instagram and Facebook.
Despite the fact Langston says sweaters with pictures were among the popular Christmas items during Christmas 2013, it is imaginable that onesies will fight for their life in fashion industry this year, if sharing on social networking sites does not decrease. Who would not want to wear the latest trends, right?
