America’s favourite first lady hit the big 50 this month, and proved to women everywhere that you can still look completely fabulous on the other side of 40. Since the Obamas moved into the White House in 2008, Mrs. Obama has seemingly stolen most of the limelight; her grace, her elegance and her style have captured the hearts of the nation.
Her penchant for bare arms and big, beautiful pearl necklaces along with classy statement brooches have reached a status of signature style, earning her comparisons with Jackie O as the most chique first lady to occupy the White House since the Kennedys. Michelle has repeatedly won over fashion critics, leading future first ladies down the right fashion path.
There is something about the styles of national role models which fascinates the fashion world. Their choice of clothing down to the tiniest accessory is constantly under scrutiny, with designers desperate to see their creations flaunted by these style icons.
Michelle Obama manages to nail it every time in the style stakes, scoring extra points for choosing affordable labels. Women everywhere can duplicate her fabulous looks, having only to step into the likes of Banana Republic or Crew J to find the perfect first-lady-esque outfit. Thank goodness! You really can look just as classic and elegant, without having to break the bank.
It’s refreshing to see such icons wearing accessible fashion, feeling like they don’t have to walk the streets dressed head to toe in haute couture. As a representative of the country, Michelle has to look the part; she often has to combine looking youthful yet appropriate. As we all know, this is no mean feat. But Michelle makes it look easy; she hasn’t once crossed the line when it comes to looking appropriately graceful and sassy, for a woman hitting 50.
So as the Obamas celebrate their favourite lady’s big birthday, the world of fashion celebrates a wonderful five years of perfect style guidance from a truly inspirational woman.
