TELANGANA — Indian congress party’s head Sonia Gandhi’s idol has been built in the Indian state of Telangana. Shankar Rao, a state legislator, has built the nine foot long bronze idol. Rao stated that the temple was built to honour Sonia Gandhi for her party’s decision to split Telangana from Andhra Pradesh and form a new state that is home to 35 million people.
According to Rao, this is their way of thanking Gandhi for her “historic role in fulfilling the decades-old dream of a separate Telangana state.” Sonia Gandhi, an Italian-born Indian, belongs to the very influential Nehru-Gandhi Dynasty.
The statue resembles Telangana Talli, the Mother goddess of Telangana, whom Sonia Gandhi has been compared to. The idol holds a sapling in one hand and a bowl of fruit in the other. It has been built in a style similar to other Hindu goddess idols in South India.
Mrs. Gandhi has not given any official comment on the gesture.
