A popular Lebanese restaurant in central Kabul came under the attack of a suicide bomber resulting in 13 people confirmed dead, officials say. The total number of casualties have still not been confirmed, however, reports of a number of foreigners killed have surfaced and remain unconfirmed.
The restaurant was popularly visited by wealthy locals and foreigners that resided in the nearby area also home to several embassies. The attack reportedly took place during the dinner service, with witnesses claiming hearing rounds of gun fire. A few insurgents have been reported to have entered the venue following the bomb explosion which took place outside.
The Taliban have claimed responsibility for the attack stating the foreigners killed were German nationals. Local officials and German authorities have not confirmed the deaths.
Police operations are still being undertaken within the restaurant.
UPDATE
A British National has been confirmed by the UK Foreign Office to be among those killed in the attack.
The death toll has reportedly risen up to at least 21.
The restaurant’s owner and an IMF representative are also reported to be among those dead.
The attackers have been shot dead by the police following their operation to secure the location.
UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon confirmed the loss of three UN officials (reportedly a Russian, an American and a Pakistani) in the attack.
Britain, US and Canada have confirmed the death of at least two of their nationals, respectively.
