VOLGOGRAD – At least 18 people were killed and several others were injured in a suicide bomb attack in southern Russia. According to The National Anti-Terrorism Committee, the blast at the central railway station was set off by a female suicide bomber at 12:45 local time:

“Today at around 1300 an unconfirmed explosive device was detonated in front of the metal detector at the entrance to the train station in Volgograd. The preliminary findings show that it was activated by a female suicide bomber.”

An Islamist insurgency has led to many attacks in Russia over the past few years. Just last Friday, a car bomb killed three people in Pyatigorsk. North Caucasus region in particularly is constantly being shaken by such attacks. No group has yet claimed responsibility for today’s attack.

Moscow is reasonably concerned that militant groups could be striking in the run up to the 2014 Winter Olympic Games in six weeks in Sochi. Chechen insurgency leader Doku Umarov has posted an online video in July, calling out the militants to use “maximum force” in order to prevent the Games.

Below is a video of when the explosion occurred:
