ROME – After an extremely heated debate, the Italian Senate has just voted for the exclusion of former PM Silvio Berlusconi. The assembly was summoned to debate on and approve the commission’s suggestion to expel Berlusconi from the Parliament. The Senate also had to decide whether to approve or not the nine orders of the day proposed by Forza Italia (FI), Berlusconi’s party, whose main function was to introduce secret voting. The debate, which started this morning, was frequently interrupted by FI senator protests, some of which were dressed in black as a sign of mourning. The Senate started to vote around five o’clock. FI voted for the orders of the day, together with Lega Nord and the new right-wing party, Nuovo Centro Destra, while Monti’s former party, Scelta Civica, and centre-left Partito Democratico (PD) with other opposition parties voted against. Meanwhile, in front of his Roman residence in Via del Plebiscito, Berlusconi had gathered his supporters, where he once again explained that he is the victim of a conspiracy planned by some judges and the centre-left. He further declared that, though he will not be a Senator anymore, he will continue his political commitment in order to bring “wealth and freedom” in Italy.
More to come.
