The Uruguayan parliament has just passed a bill allowing for Uruguayan citizens to produce and consume marijuana legally.

The bill which has been supported by Uruguayan President Jose Mujica will allow for consumers to buy up to 40 grams per month, and cultivate 6 plants in a property, It will also allow for business to  open which will have an allowance of 100 plants.

This law comes as a way to fight illegal production in the South American Country.

It is expected that the price of a legal gram of marijuana will be of approximately 1 Dollar, this is part of the plan to get rid of illegal production in the country. The “street” price of illegal marijuana nowadays is in average 1.40 Dollars per gram.

Latin American states have reacted with scepticism to the new law, stating that this bill will not work and might deepen the already problematic drug trafficking phenomenon in South America.

Uruguay becomes to first country to legalise production and consumption of Cannabis.
