MADRID – King Juan Carlos’ youngest daughter, the Infanta Cristina, has been summoned to appear in court, in Palma de Mallorca on March the 8th, over accusations of fraud and money laundering. The princess is now considered as a formal suspect by the Spanish Justice as she is believed to be linked to the businesses of her husband, Inaki Urdangarin, Duke of Palma, who is being investigated for alleged embezzlement. Indeed, Mr. Urdangarin is being accused of misusing millions of euros of public funds, given to a charity he ran, by investing them in the purchase of real estates, which were impounded last year.
It is the first time in Spanish history that a direct relative of the monarch is being summoned in court, accused of wrongdoing. Moreover, such an unusual event comes amid the plummeting popularity of the Spanish royal family, as polls showed that only 36.8% of the Spanish population supported the monarchy.
