SANTIAGO – The former President of Chile, Michelle Bachelet, confirmed yesterday in a photo exhibition held in the civic center of the Forest (Santiago)that she will be presidential candidate for the upcoming elections in November.
Bachelet ruled Chile between 2006 and 2010 by adhering to a center-left line made up of the Socialist Party and the Party for Democracy (PPD), both members of the Coalition. So the former president plans to go to the same party for the next elections to be held on June 30 where she fights in the primaries before heading to the presidential term in November.
The Chilean held the position of Executive Director of the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women) until March 15, when she submitted her resignation to return to Chile. UN Secretary General, Ban Ki-moon, said that the “visionary leadership of Michelle Bachelet gave UN Women the dynamic start I needed”.
Chile’s future is uncertain but it is clear that much of the Chilean population are unhappy with the current government led by Sebastián Piñera who follows rightist ideologies. Among some of the stronger claims made by the people is the free education and recognition of the Mapuche community. Can be such problems be possibly adjusted with a new President?
