With the holidays approaching, often the first wish that comes to mind is to travel abroad. But then you remember how much you usually spend on flight tickets and your wish suddenly dissolves. Is this the story of your life? Read on for a few essential tips.

When it comes to buying flight tickets, the first thing to know is that they are usually cheaper several months in advance. If you buy tickets a week before your planned trip, it will cost you a fortune. But if you get organised at least three months in advance, it will most probably cost half the amount. So the first rule of cheap holidays is planning ahead.

However, many people like to improvise and suddenly leave for a few days. Tickets can also be extremely cheap a few days before the flight date, as companies have a priority to sell them. Another thing to bear in mind is the airline you are travelling with. Research all the possibilities!  Don’t just look at British Airways and say with a sigh: “Oh, it’s too expensive! I am not going anywhere…” Look at all the airlines that offer flights to and from your destination. For example, if you are travelling from London to Paris, French airways and even Dutch ones might be a lot cheaper.

Furthermore, there are several airlines that are almost always cheap. The well-known Easyjet sometimes has flights for just £3.00 if you buy them in advance — and no, this is not a joke! You do have to pay for your suitcase separately, however if you are not fond of taking large amounts of clothes with you, a small suitcase as hand luggage may be perfect for you.

For those of us who don’t travel that lightly, the main suitcase is another aspect to be considered. Always weigh it before you go to the airport. Even if you exceed the limit by just 1kg, you will be asked to pay a lot, which is not a pleasant way to start a holiday.

Keep all of these tips in mind and you will never have to deny your desire to travel abroad.
