DAMASCUS : The Free Syrian Army has ruled out the prospect of complying with any scheduled peace talks at the upcoming Geneva talks in January.
The commander of the western-backed FSA, Salim Idriss , has vowed that there will be no ceasefire during the conference, instead stating they will continue their battle to topple Bashar al- Assad. He warned that Assad will use the talks to buy time and continue to wage war.
He said: “We will not stop combat at all during the Geneva conference or after it, and what concerns us is getting needed weapons for our fighters.”
Western forces have been trying to negate a deal between oppoisiton forces and the Syrian government for some time. The planned talks in January would be the first since the conflict began 32 months ago.
Gen. Idriss’ comments follow days of heavy fighting and violence in the capital and in northern city Aleppo. On Tuesday a suicide bomb killed 15 and wounded 30.
