TRIER — A British jet crashing in Germany is believed to have taken four lives, German police announced on January 12. The jet set off from West Sussex and fell down near the city of Trier, Germany. It was transporting four German nationals, among which were  two pilots and two passengers.

The plane was a Cessna Citation business jet. Its final destination was supposed to have been the German town of Foehren, which is close to the crash site. As the plane came down, it was reported to have damaged an electricity pylon on the Koblenz-Trier railway line. The crash site was a landfill site near the city of Trier. Reports claim that the aircraft was in flames by the time the fire fighters arrived at the scene.

ShorehamInformation on the casualties and the aircraft’s route were released by a spokesman for the Trier-Foehren airfield. He confirmed that the plane had set off from Shoreham airport and all four casualties were German. The two passengers were a 61-year-old businessman from the region of Trier, and his wife, who was 60. The other two casualties were the pilot and co-pilot, who have not been immediately recognised, police reports say.

News of the crash came from an anonymous witness, who called the emergency services to the site. The cause of the crash still remains unknown. Although, it has been noted that the weather was  foggy. “We are aware of the reports and are urgently looking into them,” a spokesman of the Foreign Office commented.

Shoreham airport tweeted: “We are aware of the accident at Trier Airport in Germany today which involved an aircraft that departed from Shoreham Airport at 0954 GMT” and later: “Our thoughts are with the friends and family of those involved in the aircraft accident near Trier-Foehren Airport earlier today.” The identities of the casualties have so far been withheld.
