CALIFORNIA- Facebook Inc. is facing legal prosecution over allegations that reveal a breach in user privacy. The allegations accuse Facebook of profiting through providing marketers and advertisers with information by monitoring its users’ private messages.

The suit notes the company’s violation in attempting to conjure user web activity profiling through scrutinising web links embedded within private messages indicating a reported breach of the Electronic Communications Privacy Act and California’s unfair competition and privacy laws.

The accusations devalue the social networking site’s credibility regarding its privacy features. The lawsuit is reported to be claiming a value of $100 a day for each day of privacy breach or $10,000 per user on behalf of all Facebook users in the past two years who have sent or received private messages with web links.

A statement in the lawsuit reads “Representing to users that the content of Facebook messages is “private” creates an especially profitable opportunity for Facebook,”.

Facebook responded to the suit stating the accusations were “without merit” and stressed an impending severe defence on their part.

The plaintiffs, Michael Hurley and Matthew Campbell filed the complaint in a federal court in San Jose, California.
