Munich air disaster survivor Bill Foulkes has passed away at the age of 81 yesterday morning, according to the Manchester United website.
Foulkes, who played for the Reds his entire career, had an impressive 688 caps for his club, only less than behind Ryan Giggs, Bobby Charlton and Paul Scholes.
The centre-back was a survivor of the tragic 1958 Munich air disaster and one of the most well-known stars in the ‘Busby Babes’ of the 1950s.
He helped the club to four 1st division titles, the FA Cup in 1963 and the European Cup in 1968, a first for the Manchester side.
Twitter exploded with condolences towards the death of the player, with Manchester United star Michael Carrick tweeting “Thoughts are with the friends and family of Bill Foulkes, so sad to hear he passed away this morning. Great servant to this club. RIP ”.
In an official statement on the website, executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward stated that “Bill was a giant character in the post-war history of Manchester United. His contribution over almost 700 games and nearly 20 years will never be forgotten.”
