DHAKA – Bangladesh’s law enforcement authorities have confirmed that a prime suspect in the murder of Bangladeshi-American blogger, Avijit Roy, has been killed in a reported “shoot-out” in Dhaka. This news comes only a day after another man died in police custody.

The suspect, Sharif, who also went by the name Hadi, was a member of the banned Ansarullah Bangla Team. Masudur Rahman, Dhaka Deputy Police Commissioner confirmed that he was killed in the early hours of Sunday in the Khilgaon district.

Sharif along with two other men were passing through Khilgaon area on a motorcycle, when they opened fire on police officials. In the exchange of fire, Sharif was injured and later succumbed to his injuries on Sunday at the Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

While Sharif was immediately taken into custody, his two companions are currently absconding.

Ajit Roy, father of the deceased blogger and a former professor of physics at Dhaka University, said that had Sharif been capture alive, he would have divulged much more information. He said: “Police and law enforcement agencies have committed the incident in connivance with each other.”

Avijit Roy was killed in February 2015 not far from the Dhaka University campus.
